Zeitouni Moves to Weizmann Institute of Science

Professor Ofer Zeitouni has resigned his position at the University of Minnesota to be full time at the Weizman Institute while taking a position of Distinguished Global Professor at the Courant Institute.

Please join us in wishing Ofer the best in this new stage of his very successful career. He will continue to visit from time to time, including this summer, but we will certainly miss his presence here as a colleague.

Congratulations to New Associate Professors

The Board of Regents approved the promotion of Anar Akhmedov and Yoichiro Mori to Associate Professor of Mathematics with tenure. Anar's research is in low-dimensional topology, smooth 4-manifolds, and symplectic topology, while Yoichiro's is in mathematical biology, and numerical and applied analysis.

Binder, Goh and Liu Receive Awards

Andrew Binder was awarded a 2013 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG). This three-year fellowship is given to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.

Ryan Goh and Gang Liu received the Charles and Dorothy Andrew Bird Award from the University of Minnesota's Sigma Xi Chapter. The award is given to an undergraduate or graduate student for outstanding research in the form of: 1) a thesis; 2) a paper or papers accepted for presentation at a national meeting; or 3) a paper or papers accepted for peer-reviewed journal publication.

Akhmedov Receives Guillermo E. Borja Award

Professor Anar Akhmedov has received the Guillermo E. Borja Award. The award is given by the College of Science and Engineering, and recognizes exceptional research and scholarly accomplishments by a candidate for tenure during the probationary period.

Mayboroda Receives AWM-Sadosky Research Prize in Analysis

Professor Svitlana Mayboroda has been named as the first recipient of the AWM-Sadosky Research Prize in Analysis. The prize is awarded by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) to highlight to the community outstanding contributions by women in the field and to advance the careers of the prize recipients. The award is named for Cora Sadosky, a former president of AWM, and will be presented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore, MD, in January 2014.

Shinn Awarded Goldwater Scholarship

Maxwell Shinn has been named a 2013 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. Max is a sophomore majoring in neuroscience and mathematics. He has been involved in research under Professors Duane Nykamp of the School of Mathematics, Philip Zelazo of the Institute for Child Development and Professor Clarence Lehman of the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior. He also holds an AXA Achievement Scholarship and a University of Minnesota Presidential Scholarship.

Three UMN students received Goldwater scholarships this year and another received an honorable mention.

Othmer 2013 SIAM Fellow

Hans Othmer has been named a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). His citation reads "For contributions to mathematical biology, in particular the theory of pattern formation in biological systems."

Foo Receives McKnight Professorship

Assistant Professor Jasmine Foo is the recipient of a McKnight Land-Grant Professor for 2013-15. Her project is entitled Discovering the Mathematics of Cancer Evolution.

Using probability theory, she is working to develop comprehensive quantitative theories of the evolutionary processes driving cancer initiation, progression and treatment response, and applying these theories to design optimal treatment strategies that maximize the survival benefit of cancer therapeutics.
